Australia has blasted a world record score of 3-263 in the opening T20 to  beat Sri Lanka by 85 runs overnight.

The Aussies beat the previous international T20 record of 6-260 set by Sri Lanka against Kenya in 2007.

The win was set up by a scary knock from Victorian Glenn Maxwell, who blasted an unbeaten 145 runs from just 65 balls. His innings included 14 fours and nine sixes at a strike rate of 223.

Maxwell recorded the second highest international T20 score in history, failing 11 runs short of the 156 scored by countryman Aaron Finch.

“I’ve been out of the one-day team for a while now, so to get my first crack back in the main team and to do as well as I did today was brilliant,” Maxwell said post-match.

“A little bit (of a point to prove).

“I had doubted a fair bit about my ability at this level and to come out and strike the ball like I did today was really pleasing.”

Maxwell opened the batting with David Warner, who scored 28 (16 balls), while Usman Khawaja and Travis Head chimed in with 36 (22 balls) and 45 (18 balls) respectively.

In reply, Sri Lanka fell 85 runs short, reaching 9-178 off their 20 overs.
