Young Victorian batsman Peter Handscomb looks to have one foot in the Australian side for the third Test against South Africa, after scoring a blistering double ton for the Bushrangers on Friday.

Following a disastrous loss by an innings and 80 runs in Hobart, coach Darren Lehmann stated there will be changes for the Adelaide Test and Handscomb, one of several state level players pushing for a Test birth, has produced a scintillating and timely innings.

With fellow Test aspirants Cameron Bancroft (two), Callum Ferguson (four) and Matthew Wade (six) all failing, Handscomb stood tall on day two of the Vics' Shield clash with New South Wales, smashing 215 runs.

Handscomb's knock included 23 boundaries and one six and lasted 356 balls, showing the kind of patients at the crease that has been lacking in the Australian Test side.

Victoria declared their innings on 6-510, with Cameron White 75 not out and Dan Christian unbeaten on 19.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Queensland opener, Matt Renshaw also threw his hat in the ring for an unlikely Test call up, scoring an impressive 108 from 202 balls in the Bulls' Shield clash with South Australia at the Gabba.
