New South Wales Blues batsman Nick Maddinson has been ruled out of the opening Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland due to concussion.

Maddinson suffered a blow to the head while batting during the Matador Cup semi-final against Victoria on Friday. He passed a concussion test on the day and played out the match.

However, during Sunday's final, which the Blues won by six wickets, Maddinson began to feel ill. He has since undergone another concussion test, which he failed, ruling him out of this week's Shield clash.

“As a result (of the failed concussion test), he has been withdrawn from the Sheffield Shield squad due to fly to Brisbane today (Monday),” NSW medico Dr John Orchard said.

“Cricket Australia’s concussion policy requires that players are monitored, including follow-up tests for signs of concussion in the days after a knock to the head.”

Maddinson joins teammate Daniel Hughes on the sidelines for the opening match, after Hughes was also ruled out due to concussion after he too was struck on the helmet during the Blues' win over the Vics on Friday.
