Several Test aspirants have staked their claims for a spot in the opening match against South Africa on November 3 at the WACA.

Queenslanders Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja both impressed against a strong New South Wales bowling line-up during the opening round of the Sheffield Shield, as they look to reclaim their spots in the Test side.

Khawaja scored 79 batting at No.3, while Burns scored 129, as the Bulls declared on 6-330, in response to the Blues' 7-327 declared. At stumps on day two, NSW are 0-51, with a lead of 48 runs.

Meanwhile, Victorian fast bowler Peter Siddle took the new ball for the Bushrangers and bowled with exciting pace and impressive accuracy, finishing with 1-17 off 10 overs, with Tasmania 4-93 at stumps on day two.

Victoria are well on top, after scoring 415 in the first innings, thanks to a century from Marcus Harris and half-centuries to Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade and Cameron White.

Shaun Marsh made a successful return from a hamstring injury for Western Australia as he races the clock to be fit for the first Test, scoring 72 opening the batting with youngster Cameron Bancroft (20), as WA reached 9-271 declared in their first innings.
