Australian paceman Pat Cummins will be sent home early from the Aussies' tour of India to prepare for November's Ashes series.

Cummins will play the remaining three ODIs against India, however, will skip October's three-game Twenty20 series, with selectors opting to place the injury-prone fast bowler in cotton wool ahead of the all important Australian summer.

"Pat has played a considerable amount of cricket this year after a long period away from the game due to injury," national selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement.

"His body has handled the return to international cricket well, but we believe the best plan for him ahead of the Ashes Series is to return home to refresh, both mentally and physically, before he prepares for Sheffield Shield cricket."

Cummins has taken one wicket from the first two ODIs against India. The hosts currently lead the five-match series 2-0.
