India has taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match one-day international series against Australia after a rain affected game one in Chennai overnight.
The hosts scored 7-281, before rain reduced Australia's innings to 21 overs, with the Aussies falling 27 runs short of the revised target of 164, reaching 9-137.
The tourists started brilliantly, reducing the hosts to 3-11 thanks to a brilliant opening spell from Nathan Coulter-Nile and an astonishing catch from Glenn Maxwell to remove skipper Virat Kohli for a duck.
However, India recovered to post a competitive total, thanks largely to MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya, who scored 79 and 83 respectively in the middle of the order.
Coulter-Nile grabbed three wickets, Marcus Stoinis two, while Adam Zampa and James Faulkner claimed one wicket each.
Australia were then forced to wait for two hours before going out to bat, with rain setting in after lunch.
Once the tourists walked out to bat, the innings had been reduced to just 21 overs and the target to 164.
In what was always going to be a tough chase for Australia, they lost wickets regularly throughout the chase and never really got going.
Quick fire score of 25, 39 and 32 from Dave Warner, Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner were the highlights for the Aussies, but it was not enough, as every other player failed to reach double figures.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the best of the bowlers with three wickets, while Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two each.
