Australia captain Steve Smith says the Aussies will not take four pacemen into the first Champions Trophy match against new Zealand.

The Aussies had expected to unleash all four pacemen of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson on the Kiwis, however, Smith said that one of them will miss out due to team balance.

All-rounders John Hastings or Marcus Stoinis are likely to be vying for the fourth paceman spot.

“I don’t think we’ll end up going with the four big quicks. We’ve got a couple of options there as all-rounders,” Smith said on Thrusday.

“Stoinis did very well in New Zealand in the last series, and Hastings has done very well for us over in these conditions. He’s a little bit slower than the others and hits the seam and has some good skills throughout the middle as well.”

Australia kicks off its campaign against New Zealand on Friday night AEST.
