Pat Cummins will take the reins for the first time in a fully fit squad looking to counter England in the longer of the two white-ball formats, with a three-game ODI series starting next week.

With Cummins grasping the prized role of captain, filling the shoes of the retiring Aaron Finch, a hole at the top of the order will mean Travis Head is next in line to partner David Warner as a left-handed opening combination.

"Travis Head returns in place of Aaron Finch having played well in Pakistan and Sri Lanka earlier in the year," selection chief George Bailey said.

"He has demonstrated flexibility in the types of roles he can play in our ODI line-up."

With a lengthy batting order a continual focus in the eyes of selectors, all-rounders Mitch Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell as well as Cam Green resume their role in coloured clothing.

"Our focus is to continue to build a squad with an eye to next year's World Cup under Pat as the new ODI captain, so it's an important series," Bailey said.

"Our next opportunity in the ODI format will be in India next year which will allow us to experience similar conditions as for the World Cup in October."

A positive outlook on the upcoming series allows sufficient time to be allocated in order to freshen up after the hosts bowed out of the T20 World Cup with an early exit courteous of net run rate.

The squad responsible for the handling of England in the Ashes whitewash has been entrusted with facing the West Indies in a two-game home series headed for Perth and Adelaide Oval.

With COVID-19 protocols needing to be abided by in recent years a reduced list has been posted with Michael Neser, Mitchell Swepson and Jhye Richardson absent due to the downsizing.

The reinstated Marcus Harris has been rewarded with hot form in domestic leagues whilst Victorian captain Peter Handscomb was overlooked despite support growing for his recall after making runs for fun for his state side.

"Marcus Harris retains his place after continuing to perform for Gloucestershire in the English County competition and a strong start to the Marsh Sheffield Shield season," Bailey said today.

"After some larger squads for the subcontinent tours over the winter, we have returned to a very similar squad to that which performed strongly last summer in comprehensively winning the Ashes."

The spearhead three-pronged attack will be tested amongst a busy schedule to start the calendar year, where depth will be drawn upon to negotiate the nonstop series for the current Aussie squads selected.
