Daniel Vettori and Andre Borovec will join Australia's tour of Sri Lanka next month, with the duo confirmed as the nation's new assistant coaches.

While Vettori's record speaks for itself, it's not every day that Australia signs a coach with no first-class experience in Borovec.

In an immediate job change, Borovec will leave his assistant role with the Victorian Men's team, beginning by coaching Australia A, before joining the squad alongside Vettori for the tour of Sri Lanka.

Borovec was recently involved in Australia's white ball tour of Pakistan, with the need for new full time assistant coaches coming following the elevation of Andrew McDonald to become Justin Langer's long-term replacement, and the departure of Jeff Vaughan to coach Tasmania.

The biggest question is how can someone with no professional experience, tell professional sportspeople what to do and how to do it?

While Borovec admits he understands the question and its validity, it isn't an issue for the former first-grade wicket-keeper.

"As coaches, we've got to be OK with saying, 'I don't know'," the 43-year-old told cricket.com.au.

"That can be just as powerful.

"If you're prepared as a coach to show people that you care and you're willing to listen and want to understand how the player learns – that's an important trait to have whether you've played the game or not."

Unsurprisingly, Borovec hasn't just fallen into this position. The 44-year-old is highly regarded as a mentor. His time with Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades, as well as with Australia in white-ball cricket has left him in high regard.

Vettori, on the other hand, who is now 43 years of age, has played 113 Tests and 295 ODIs for New Zealand.

It's believed his contract will run over a jam-packed next 18 months, including multiple sub-continent tours, a home T20 World Cup and a ODI World Cup in India.

He said he was impressed with what he has seen from the group.

"I was really impressed with what I saw of the group in Pakistan in the way they approached preparation, planning and playing. It’s a very strong and unified group which has the potential to have a very rewarding and hopefully successful period ahead," Vettori said.
