Australia fell six runs short of New Zealand in a match featuring disappointment, a miraculous Marcus Stoinis innings and a 27-minute diamond duck. Here are Zero Wicket's player ratings for the match.

Aaron Finch - 3

Called up to skipper the side at the 11th-hour, Finch's performance won't fill the selectors with much faith. Took a nice catch at mid-on to dismiss Munro. However, with his score of four he now averages eight runs in his last six ODI matches.

Travis Head - 5

Was tidy with his bowling and got the important wicket of Ross Taylor. However, he is in the side to make runs and he only managed five.

Shaun Marsh - 3

Earned his recall to the side through some blistering BBL form, but didn't manage to carry it into this match. Was stumped while dancing down the wicket on 16 and dropped Jimmy Neesham on 26 with a poor effort in the slips.

Peter Handscomb - 3

Wade's late withdrawal saw Handscomb take the gloves and he struggled. Dropped Colin Munro and Martin Guptill on 15, although it was a tough chance. Was caught behind for 7 chasing a ball he should have left.

Glenn Maxwell - 5

Took an excellent catch in the deep to remove Santner. Got a start with 20 but couldn't go on with it.

Marcus Stoinis - 10

No surprises here. A terrific knock that included twenty boundaries as he nearly single-handedly dragged Australia over the line. Was also the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. Has there ever been a better ODI performance?

Sam Heazlett - 3

Was called into the side when Matthew Wade injured his back in the warm up, can be forgiven for his poor performance in such difficult circumstances. Made 4 runs and didn't do much else.

James Faulkner - 6

Came in at a tough time when wickets were tumbling and managed to steady the ship. Scratched together 25 runs and took the important wicket of Broom.

Pat Cummins - 6

Was expensive with the ball, but was Australia's second highest run scorer with 36. Got out trying to accelerate the innings when he probably should have tried to hang in with Stoinis.

Mitchell Starc - 3

It was a rare poor match for Starc as he only managed one wicket and was expensive, although at his pace on such a small ground it was always going to be difficult. Went out in disappointing fashion as he hauled to the deep when he should have been supporting Stoinis.

Josh Hazlewood - 4

Was tidy as always with the ball and looked to be supporting Stoinis well before a brain fade lost Australia the game. He's had a terrific summer for Australia, but that run out was shattering.
