Australian star Cameron Green has entered the auction for the 2023 Indian Premier League campaign, setting off high-level alarm bells.

Green, who has a history of injury, is fast becoming part of all three formats of the Australian national teams.

While on the outer of the T20 best XI, he was included in the World Cup squad, and will feature this week for Australia as they take on England in a three-match ODI series.

The all-rounder is now a mainstay of the Test team as well, having played 14 Tests. He will double that number if he stays fit over the next eight months, with two and three-match series at home against the West Indies and South Africa respectively, as well as a four-Test trip to India for the Border-Gavaskar series and the five-match Ashes series in England.

He could make it 15 Tests in that time span if Australia qualifies for the World Test Championship, which is likely to happen given the current ladder and remaining fixtures ahead of the final, which will be held just a fortnight before the Ashes in England.

According to The Australian, Green could field plenty of cash at the auction for the IPL.

“Some teams might think of using him in the powerplay and might go after him in this year's auctions unless and until he pulls out,” Indian star Ravi Ashwin said.

“I am sure some team will break the bank for him in this year's auction.”

Green, on top of his bowling ability, has the talent to bat anywhere in the order, as showcased by a pair of half-centuries when replacing David Warner on a three-match T20 tour of India in the lead-up to the World Cup.

With the all-rounder becoming a multi-format player, and downward pressure on Australian players to spend January in the Big Bash League, it means the IPL-enforced international break will be just about the only break for multi-format Australian players between now and the end of the 2023-24 summer.

Green has been on a reduced bowling workload with Australia, and captain Pat Cummins has spoken openly about the trepidation involved with bowling the all-rounder.

“One of my first thoughts whenever I bowl him is we don't want to burn him, he's young, he's vulnerable,” Cummins said previously.

“It's been a huge win from the medical side of things to have him play as much cricket as he has over the last couple of years; fortunately, he can fall back on his batting even if he's not bowling.

“Now he's in and around three formats it becomes even more important.

“He is someone who loves playing, even when he goes back to WA we have to manage that as well.

“The are 15 Tests in the next few months plus a World Cup, lots of cricket.

“You can't really blame anyone going (in the IPL). He's going to have huge demand on him wherever he plays. Decisions will be made, there's lots of cricket around.”

The IPL draft will be held in December.
