The eighth edition of the Big Bash League is set to make a bold move in an intriguing area as it ditches the coin toss in favour of a bat flip.
Instead of heads or tails, captains will now choose between roofs and flats, with the bat set to be weighted in such a way that neither side will be favoured.
This move continues the Big Bash’s initiative to be innovative and look to bring the game to new audiences.
“For me it’s a great moment which reflects what BBL is about,” Cricket Australia’s head of the Big Bash, Kim McConnie, told the ABC.
“Some people don’t like change, but I’d also challenge people to say when was the last time anyone watched the coin toss or really focused on it to a great extent?”
The bat flip will make its debut when the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers play at the Gabba on December 19.
