Justin Langer has resigned as head coach of the Australian men's cricket team.
Langer's future had been spoken about at length throughout and after Australia's 4-0 Ashes win.
Cricket Australia met yesterday in length to discuss Langer's future, among other things, with the governing body saying they would now enter "confidential discussions" with Langer.
However, Langer, today tendered his resignation effective immediately.
The statement came from the Western Australian's management team via social media.
"DSEG confirms that our client Justin Langer has this morning tendered his resignation as coach of the Australian men's cricket team," the tweet read.
"The resignation follows a meeting with Cricket Australia last evening. The resignation is effective immediately."
Langer has had the support of a number of former teammates but seemingly lacked the support of his players.
Captain Pat Cummins refused to back Langer when speaking to media as recently as yesterday saying he didn't want to add to the speculation surrounding the future of Langer.
Australia assistant Andrew McDonald will take on the duties of interim coach following the resignation of Langer.
Australia are currently planning for a white-ball series on home soil against Sri Lanka, which begins next Friday at the SCG.
McDonald is set to lead Australia throughout the five-game series, with a decision potentially being made on the full-time role prior to the Pakistan tour in early March.
Cricket Australia have flagged the concept of splitting the senior coaching duties into two positions to better craft the nation's red and white-ball formats, with McDonald likely to be in the frame for either one of the roles should the move be given the green light.
