With the Ashes long gone and Australia's Test success behind them, the focus now turns to South Africa, and the Proteas' fierce bowling attack.

However, captain Steve Smith has told his squad that complacency is not an option ahead of the gruelling four-Test series.

While being able to reclaim the Ashes urn with a comprehensive 4-0 dominating display, the third ranked Test nation is well away from where they want to be.

"For us as a whole, we've come off the back of a pretty good Ashes campaign at home," Smith told cricket.com.au in Johannesburg on Saturday.

However, to conquer the sights that Smith and co are set on, the display in South Africa will have to be top notch, from Smith down the whole squad, with a chance to be able to do something majority of teams haven't in recent times.

"Every team around the world hasn't played well away from home for a while so that's one thing we want to improve on and it's a good opportunity for us here," Smith added.

Smith understood the dominance over England was due to dominating the big moments, not necessarily the entire five days of the test match.

"During the Ashes we won key moments," Smith said.

"We were probably behind the game in a lot of the matches and we were able to get ourselves in front of the game and not let the opposition back in.

"That was by winning key moments and against a quality side like South Africa those key moments are going to be crucial again."

With question marks over a few players in the squad, the form will be key in being able to claim an underdog victory away from home.

Cameron Bancroft is just one where he may be looking over his shoulder, being unable to capitalise in Australia against England, with just one dominant display of 80*.

The Aussies will take the field against the South Africa Invitational XI, on Thursday, before the First Test on March 1.
