Australian ODI captain Pat Cummins has pleaded guilty to slow over rate charges levelled after his side's series-opening victory over England in Adelaide on Thursday.

In what was his first victory as skipper in the format, Cummins and his ten teammates in canary yellow fell shy of bowling all 50 overs during their allotted time allowance during the six-wicket win in the City of Churches.

As reported by the AAP, Australia was found guilty of bowling two overs outside of the time period by match referee David Boon, resulting in a 40 per cent hit to each player's match payments.

International cricketing laws for the format state that players within the infringing side will be fined 20 per cent of their total payments for every over that is completed outside of the window.

Despite still being eligible to captain the hosts during the second fixture of the short-form series, Australian coach Andrew McDonald has opted to rest Cummins in an effort to prepare him for the pair of upcoming Test series against the West Indies and South Africa.

Fellow quick Josh Hazlewood will now lead Australia, with the stand-in winning the toss and electing to bat against the English attack.

Saturday's fixture at the Moore Park venue would have been the New South Welshman's first as captain within the format, having taken over the reins from embattled ex-skipper Aaron Finch earlier this year.

Cummins has led Australia's Test team since late November of 2021, succeeding Tim Payne ahead of the Ashes on home soil last summer.

The white-ball series is set to conclude in Melbourne on Tuesday.
