A reported stand-off between Cricket Australia and Justin Langer over the length of the latter's contract could see the head coach walk from his role ahead of the Australian's tour of Pakistan.

As stated by Fairfax Media on Tuesday, the CA board is set to meet to discuss a myriad of topics later this week, including whether or not to extend Langer's deal as chief steward.

Secondary reports from Fox Sports claim that the Western Australian will meet with the game's brass on Friday of this week, a full seven days after claims that previous conversations became "heated" when it was suggested that Langer may need to re-apply for his current position.

Cricket Australia resoundingly dismissed this contention via an unorthodox statement released on Tuesday morning.

In the wake of this board-level refutal, The Australian wrote that while Langer is seeking a four-year deal that is set to kick in mid-way through this year, it remained highly unlikely that such a contract would be forthcoming.

Fox Sports then suggested that a two-year term could well be extended instead, however, the former opening batter is likely to hook this as it would see him fall out-of-contract ahead of the 2023 Ashes series.

Should a second four-year deal fail to arise, reports suggest that Langer will not board the Australian's plane to Pakistan in March, irrespective of the fact that he will still be under contract.

If this situation prevails, current assistant coach and four-time Australian Test representative Andrew McDonald would be the front runner to lead the tourists.

McDonald will also lead Australia during the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka as Langer is currently taking a leave of absence to spend time with family.
