Jonathon Trott has officially been appointed as Afghanistan's new head coach.

The former batsman, who played 52 Tests, 67 ODIs and 7 T20Is in a career for England which spanned from 2007 to 2015, also played 281 first class games in his career.

The South African-born 41-year-old has since been working with the England set up as a batting coach, having toured to India in 2021 with the side.

He has also worked with the nation's under-19s team, however, this will be his first head coaching opportunity on the global stage.

Afghanistan are one of cricket's newest two Test nations, having joined Ireland in making the jump up, and the ever-improving nation will have more and more opportunities to take on top teams in the coming years, with the next future tours programme to be released by the ICC in the coming weeks, covering the period from 2023 to 2027.

Trott's first appointment as Afghanistan's head coach will be a tour to Ireland in August.

“I'm honoured and excited to have the opportunity to take one of international cricket's most exciting teams through what is a huge year for their development as a team," Trott said in a statement released confirming his appointment.

“I can't wait to get to work with a group of players who are clearly capable of generating results in a style that will make the people of Afghanistan proud."

The tour of Ireland will see Afghanistan play five T20 matches, with no further confirmed fixtures on their schedule at this stage prior to the T20 World Cup in Australia, to commence in late October, with Afhanistan grouped alongside England, New Zealand, hosts Australia and two yet to be determined qualifiers.
