Former Australian Test wicket-keeper Peter Nevill is set to sign with the Melbourne Stars for the upcoming Big Bash League season.

Nevill has at times struggled to hold a place in T20 franchise cricket throughout his career, with a more conventional batting technique.

The Hawthorn-born wicket-keeper played 17 Tests for Australia between 2015 and 2016, only averaging 22.28 with the stick, but taking 61 catches and a pair of stumping.

At Big Bash level, he has played 56 matches, starting out with the Sydney Sixers in 2011-12, before switching to the Melbourne Renegades in 2012-13, and then going back to the Sixers ahead of the 2017-18 summer where he played until 2019, but has since not had a game in the Big Bash.

However, with his time at the Sixers coming to an end, it seems he has now signed a new deal with the Melbourne Stars, according to The Daily Telegraph's Code Sports.

It's understood that Nevill will be the back up option to wear the gloves and provide depth with the bat, with the Stars having confirmed the signing of Joe Clarke as the leading light for the upcoming season.

Clarke, a 25-year-old from Shrewsbury, has played 93 T20 matches at domestic level, averaging 28 with the bat and posting three centuries.

It has been reported that as part of Nevill's role and position with the Stars, he could assist head coach David Hussey in coaching the side, with the keeper previously mentioning he would be keen on a career coaching following his playing days.

At 36 years of age, those days may not be all that far away, although he is still holding down a position in the New South Wales Sheffield Shield team where he only managed scores of 1 and 20 in the most recently completed clash against Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His wicket fell to the bowling of James Pattinson in both innings.

It's understood that Nevill's addition to the squad comes with concerns around the fitness of current back up keeper Seb Gotch, who suffered a finger injury.
