Former Australian Test spinner Gavin Robertson believes that England will pick controversial all-rounder Ben Stokes for the opening test of the Ashes at the Gabba.

Stokes put his Ashes hopes in doubt after the vice-captain's arrest five weeks ago on suspicion of causing bodily harm in a brawl outside a Bristol nightclub.

He did not travel to Perth with the England team which arrived on Sunday, ahead of their two-day game tour against Western Australia on Saturday which will officially open their campaign.

However he will be at the Gabba according to Robertson who believes England will try every trick in the book to free the star player.

“England can find anyway how to work out a PR situation and how to get through that,” Robertson told Fox Sports News.

“I think they’ll want to get through that — because if he arrives now, all we’re talking about for the next two-and-a-half or three weeks is him.

“He may arrive five or six days before (the Gabba Test). You’re talking about a country that understands PR."

The English cricket team hasn't commented on whether Stokes will or will not play in this upcoming Ashes series.
