Australian opener Marcus Harris is set to retain his spot for the Boxing Day Test starting on Sunday.

Harris has been under pressure this series with the English attack seemingly having his number. He has averaged just under 10 this series with Usman Khawaja waiting in the wings.

However, Harris is set to be given another chance with the left-hander set to open the batting with David Warner on Boxing Day with coach Justin Langer backing in Harris.

Langer won't turn to 35-year-old Khawaja despite calls from the public for the Queensland captain to return.

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has also called for Australia to back Harris in rather than discard him despite his poor form.

"I would still be playing Harris in the next Test match, I would give him one more go at least, particularly now that Australia is 2-0 up," he said on Wide World of Sports.

"I think you really want to try and bring a younger player on.

"I think if you go back to Usman Khawaja at this stage - and he might play well, but then you've two 35-year-olds opening the batting for Australia.

"What you really want is a younger guy opening with batting with a senior David Warner.

"I would certainly be giving Marcus Harris one more go and hopefully on his home Test match, he comes up good on Boxing Day.

"He certainly hasn't had a lot of luck this series, he got out to two very fine catches and yet other players were some beneficiaries of some poor fielding."

Australia will be forced to make at least one change with skipper Pat Cummins set to return after missing the second Test due to Covid protocols. Fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood seems unlikely to return with Victorian quick Scott Boland added to the squad as cover.
