Adam Zampa shockingly went unsigned during the first round of bidding at the IPL auction as Josh Hazlewood led the Australian charge.

Australia's leading spin bowler, Zampa played an enormous role in the nation's recent T20 World Cup triumph, taking 13 wickets at 12.07 and an economy rate of just 5.81. It left him as the second-highest wicket-taker for the tournament, only behind Sri Lankan gun Wanindu Hasaranga.

Zampa's non-signing to the IPL came as a shock, with both Steve Smith and Matthew Wade - all with a base price of approximately $372,000 - joined him.

Hazlewood went for approximately $1.44 million to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, while Pat Cummins ($1.35 million, Kolkata Knight Riders), Mitchell March ($1.2 million, Delhi Capitals) and David Warner ($1.16 million, Delhi Capitals) were also signed during the first round of bidding.

The remainder of Australia's players will go up for auction during the second round.

Cummins $1.35 million might seem like a hefty figure, however, when it's considered he went for around $3 million in the 2020 IPL auction, he has taken a substantial pay cut, while the Sunrisers Hyderabad have turfed David Warner out of their squad, having left the at the time out of form opener on the bench for much of the second half of the IPL last year.

It left plenty calling for his exclusion from the T20 World Cup, only for the big-hitting opener to rise his value by hitting the second-highest tally of runs for the tournament.

Alongside Hazlewood, Cummins, Warner and Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell have already been signed to franchises for the season ahead, with Stoinis going to the Lucknow franchise and Maxwell retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Reports suggest the IPL will start on March 27, with Australian players potentially missing the first few games thanks to a white ball tour of Pakistan finishing on April 5, and the Sheffield Shield final wrapping up on April 4.

Day 2 of the IPL auction gets underway at 5:30pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
