Australia's Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns has hit back at veteran Cameron White, labelling his international career as not "earth-shattering."

White expressed his disappointment with selectors in a radio interview on Tuesday, complaining they were selecting players based on a "hunch," rather than domestic form.

“Right now, it seems that the Australian team at some stages is a development team,” White said.

“For me, playing for Australia isn’t about getting a chance to develop. Domestic cricket is where that happens.”

Hohns didn't take kindly to the criticism and hit back at a press conference today.

"I'm a little bit surprised by those comments, to be quite honest," Hohns said.

"The Sheffield Shield has been well-documented as being very important to us in Australian cricket - selectors, everybody."

"Cameron has had plenty of opportunities ... he has had plenty of opportunities in the past and it's probably fair to say performed okay without being earth shattering."

21-year-old batsman Sam Heazlett was chosen ahead of White in the ODI squad, despite having not yet played a senior one day match for his home state. He made 4 runs on debut.

By contrast, the 33-year-old White scored 457 runs for Victoria in October’s Matador Cup, at an average of 76.16. Last week he was named the domestic player of the year.
