The inaugural BBL player draft for international talent may have come and gone, but the Hobart Hurricanes aren't finished with their squad on the domestic front.
Just hours after confirming that gun quick Billy Stanlake would join the club from the Melbourne Stars, where he has been released from the final year of his contract, coach Jeff Vaughan, who is working with head of strategy Ricky Ponting at the club, confirmed there was some interest in having Paine turn out for the men in purple.
Paine, who stood down as Test captain ahead of last summer, has been on an indefinite break from the sport ever since.
However, it was revealed that he was training with the Tasmanian side last week and could be in line for a return to the Sheffield Shield this season to go out on his own terms.

Vaughan confirmed to reporters that Paine could be in line for a BBL call up.
"He's two weeks back into his training schedule again [and has] been really good in the nets," Vaughan said on Tuesday.
"[He's] good physically, good emotionally. Look, there's a chance, but he'll be one of a number of players we'll look at for that last position."
The Hurricanes aren't short of wicket-keepers, but are slightly short of middle order ability in their current squad following the signings of Pakistani trio Shadab Khan, Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf during the draft.
Paine last played for the Hurricanes in BBL07 - five seasons ago, and has played 43 matches in total for the club, ticking past 1110 runs at an average of almost 28.
