Cameron Green might have kept his place in Australia's squad to play the West Indies, but captain Aaron Finch has played down the chance of him being added to the T20 World Cup squad.

Australia's series against the West Indies starts on Wednesday evening, with both matches to be played in Queensland, before a three-match series follows against England before the start of the tournament.

Green was controversially left out of Australia's squad, however, injury woes for both Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis have brought him into calculations as a late addition.

Test captain Pat Cummins said last week that Green could find his way into the squad if injury problems persist, but speaking ahead of the start of the series, Finch was less confident.

"I'm not sure at the moment – I don't think so," he told reporters.

"It's just one of those things – he had a really good tour of India, it was good for him to get an opportunity to open the batting so he'll get more opportunities.

"He'll get an opportunity at some point in this series. The reason we've carried him is to have an extra bowling resource as well.

"Obviously his batting is exceptional, and he shows a lot with the ball. He keeps developing and he keeps improving every time he gets an opportunity."

Green took David Warner's spot at the top of the order with the star opener rested on the recent tour of India, and the all-rounder excelled.

Finch confirmed that despite the fact he isn't currently able to bowl due to injury, Mitchell Marsh will remain at number three, while Stoinis will reportedly return into the middle order for the English series.

"He's (Marsh) made that number three spot his own in T20 Cricket," Finch said of Marsh.

"The way that he played in the lead up and then through the World Cup (last year) is so important for the way that we want to play and to give us a lot of flexibility through that middle order."

Add to that Tim David's need for a spot in the team, as well as the conundrum to over whether to play Steve Smith or not, and even if Green was to force his way into the squad because of injury, he would be no guarantee of a spot in the final 11.
