Australian coach Justin Langer has opened up on his future in charge of the national team, saying conversations were always planned to happen following the Ashes.
Despite guiding Australia to a T20 World Cup victory - the first in the nation's history - before following it up with a commanding Ashes series victory to the tune of 4-0 against England, with a whitewash only being missed by a single wicket during a rain-hit Sydney Test, the speculation regarding Langer has only ramped up.
While captain Pat Cummins finally came out in support of Langer during the fifth Test in Hobart, Cricket Australia still have made no formal attempts to clarify the coaches position.
That has led to former stars, led by Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh, calling for Langer's contract - which expires in June - to be extended.
Langer has told SEN Radio though that conversations were always scheduled for after the Ashes series.
“People don’t seem to believe this, but the absolute truth is before the World Cup and the Ashes, we all committed to the end of the Ashes to sit down and have some conversations,” Langer told SEN Mornings.
“It’s been four really big years and it’s an all-encompassing job and it’s a tough gig … that’s just the truth.
“We all said that we’d sit down after the Ashes. So in the next little bit, I’m sure those conversations will start to be had.
“There’s plenty to be spoken about.”
Langer's future is expected to be determined in the coming weeks, with a tour to Pakistan with the Test team set to be his final assignment on the current contract, which has ran for four years since Darren Lehmann resigned in the wake of the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal.
