Mitchell Johnson has joined the chorus of senior cricketers slamming national selectors for ignoring domestic form.

The Australian veteran condemned the "out of nowhere" selection of 21-year-old Sam Heazlett, who is yet to play a senior domestic one day game.

“I wasn’t too pleased on the selection,” Johnson said on Bill and Boz on Fox Sports News 500.

“It’s out of nowhere and basically, I don’t think he’s played a Shield game and I’m not even sure he’s played a one-day game for Queensland."

“I don’t know what the selection is for. It’s based on something they might have seen in an under-19s tournament, but you’ve got to pick some experienced players in that situation and unfortunately they’re not doing it."

Heazlett was chosen ahead of Victorian veteran Cameron White, who was last week named the domestic player of the year. White scored 457 runs for Victoria in October’s Matador Cup, at an average of 76.16. Heazlett made 4 runs on debut.

Johnson said the selectors had numerous experienced players who were more deserving of a place in the squad.

“Cameron White was one of those guys who was in the top five in the Matador Cup early in the summer. Callum Ferguson was another guy, George Bailey — guys with experience and great knowledge of the game, there’s a huge opportunity for them."

“I think we just saw in that game in New Zealand, some of those experienced guys over there would’ve been a huge help.”

Cameron White also had a go at selectors yesterday, labelling the squad selected for the New Zealand tour as a "development team."

“Right now, it seems that the Australian team at some stages is a development team,” White told RSN927 radio.

“For me, playing for Australia isn’t about getting a chance to develop. Domestic cricket is where that happens.”

Johnson agreed with White's comments, he also went on to single-out Callum Ferguson as a player who has been unfairly overlooked.

“I felt really sorry for Callum Ferguson, who’s performed well at Shield level. He was averaging over 50 in the past couple of seasons,” Johnson said.

“He plays one game and was unfairly dropped, I thought. Even looking at Nic Maddinson, a guy that I don’t if he’s scored a 100 in Shield cricket. He’s got talent but another guy that probably didn’t get a real good crack as well."

“Where’s the pattern? I don’t know. And from the players’ point of view that are playing in the Shield competition, they’ve got no idea as well what they need to do.”
