Channel Nine commentator Mark Nicholas will take some leave from work after twice falling ill with abdominal pains within the first three days of the Boxing Day Test.

The Englishman was taken to hospital on day one of the Test with abdominal pain, but was later discharged from hospital that night.

He was ordered to rest on day two, and returned on day three, only to fall ill with the same problem during the final session of the day.

Channel Nine released a statement on Nicholas' health on Thursday morning, saying the commentator would be taking some time away from the game in a bid to better his health.

"Mark is taking leave to resolve his health issues," a Nine spokesperson said.

"He wants to thank everyone again for their kind wishes and continued support."
