Australian captain Steve Smith says Jackson Bird will play in the opening Test against Pakistan that starts in Brisbane on Thursday, but that doesn't mean that quick Chadd Sayers won't play.

With the Gabba deck looking to be one for the fast bowlers, Smith is still torn between playing Nathan Lyon, meaning either Lyon or Sayers will get the final spot in the Test side.

“We don’t (have a team) yet, we want to have another look at the wicket today and determine which way we want to go from there,” said Smith.

“It’s possible [we'll play four seamers], yes.”
