The Australian squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka has thrown a couple of surprises into the mix.

20-year-old Will Pucovski is the biggest shock, called up to the national team after just eight first-class games.

Pucovski has shown plenty of promise with two big hundreds in his short career including 243 against Western Australia in October.

Joining him in the squad are Queensland pair Matt Renshaw and Joe Burns, both of whom have been recalled after last playing in the final test of the South African tour last year.

Burns’ form in the Sheffield Shield has been decent, while Renshaw has struggled to find some consistent form.

It looks as if the two Queenslanders will be battling for the opening position alongside Marcus Harris.

Both players will be a part of the CA XI in Sri Lanka’s warm-up game and their performances will likely be key to seeing who gets the final spot.

Marnus Labuschagne has retained his place following an encouraging showing in the final Test against India.

The four main bowlers are all in the squad despite Starc being under pressure for under-performing and some calling for some bowlers to be given a go ahead of the Ashes in August.

The two test series begins in Brisbane at the Gabba on January 24.
