Australian coach Darren Lehmann has implored the plethora of ex-players and media personalities who have slammed the selection panel since the announcement of the first Test squad to get behind the national side.

Several former players, including Stuart MacGill and Shane Warne have questioned the selections, particularly those of Shaun Marsh and Tim Paine.

However, Lehmann has urged everyone to put their grievances aside and fully support and get behind the team as we head in to a huge Ashes campaign.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion," Lehmann said

"I'd just like all our players and ex-players to be really positive about the Australian cricket team, that'd be the way to go.

"I'm looking forward to everyone getting behind Australia in the contest that's about to unfold.

"Let's just get everyone from Australia behind the Australian cricket team and let's get moving forward.

"Selection is over, now we get stuck in to the side getting prepared the best they can to play in what's going to be a bloody exciting series."

Despite the shock at some of the selections, Lehmann said he was confident the team was capable of performing well and reclaiming the urn.

"It was tough but we were very clear with the way we wanted to go," Lehmann added.

"We made sure the three Shield games were really important so everyone got a good hit out and put their case forward before we selected the side."

The biggest selection bombshell was that of Tim Paine, who was named as the national side's wicketkeeper, despite not even keeping for Tasmania this season. But Lehmann said Paine's selection was warranted.

“We’ve watched him keep a fair bit,” the coach said. “Obviously T20s and the chairman’s game…he’s a high quality keeper.

“I was very impressed with him down in the Adelaide game when he played against England. He’s been in good form with the gloves, as he always has been, and he has been very good for us in the T20s.”

The first Test begins at the Gabba on Thursday.
