Despite coming under heavy scrutiny following a lean patch with the bat, opener Matt Renshaw has the backing of the playing group and the "inner sanctum", according to Nathan Lyon.

After struggling in India and Bangladesh earlier this year, plus a poor start to the Sheffield Shield season this year, many have questioned Renshaw's place in the Test side.

However, Lyon says he has the full support of his teammates, who are backing the youngster to find his form in the Ashes series.

"The last Test he played in Australia, he got 180," Lyon said on Wednesday.

"I'm not a selector but I like Matt. I'm a big fan of Matt Renshaw.

"He's a class batter, he got unlucky in two dismissals here.

"Playing cricket for Australia, you're going to come under scrutiny from media and the public.

"But if you're in the inner sanctum, if you've got the support - which he does - then usually you can get out of that (negative) headspace and perform well."

Lyon said he expects any player in the team who may come under fire to receive plenty of support from his teammates in what will be a hotly contested series.

"It can be difficult, but as I said, if you've got the support around the inner sanctum, and the players and the coaching staff (then) the media can write what they want, the public can think what they want.

"I know there will be positive energy, there will be excitement, there will be a lot of support for everyone.

"There's going to be times through this whole Test series where everyone is going to be placed under pressure. It's just about how we bounce back and be resilient and try to put the Poms under pressure. And make them feel as uncomfortable as possible."

There is still plenty of intrigue around the make up of the side for the first Test, with the No.6 spot and the wicketkeeping position still yet to be determined.

As it stands, Usman Khawaja is expected to be recalled to bat at No.3, while Peter Nevill is odds on to replace Matthew wade behind the stumps. The No.6 spot is more complicated with several players, including Glenn Maxwell, who played in the last Test for Australia, Cameron Bancroft and Hilton Cartwright all in the running.
