Western Australia have unveiled a debutant for their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales, with young left-hander Sam Fanning coming in for the injured Shaun Marsh.

Marsh has been sidelined with a knee injury and while the 39-year-old isn't set to be out of action for too long, his absence has given an opportunity to Fanning to make his first class debut.

The 21-year-old started as a rookie for Western Australia in 2021-22, elevated to a full contract in 2022-23 after a strong rookie season scoring 867 runs.

Sam Whiteman has been named as captain for the match, with Kurtis Patterson leading the Blues.

The Western Australians won the toss and elected to field, taking two early wickets as play continues at the WACA.
