Marcus Stoinis has been ruled out of the remainder of Australia's ODI series in Sri Lanka after suffering a side strain while batting in Australia's two-wicket win on Tuesday.

He joins Ashton Agar, who also hurt his side in the same match, reportedly being put on ice until the Test series later this month.

The recent pair of injuries have added to a long list of injuries in the Aussie camp, with six players nursing injury niggles suffered in the last fortnight.

Mitch Marsh's calf injury is expected to keep him out until at least the third ODI (Sunday 19 June), while Australia is taking a cautious approach with Mitchell Starc's finger injury ahead of the Test series, with no fixed return date outlined.

Meanwhile, Sean Abott's finger injury and Kane Richardson's torn hamstring have already seen them both fly home to Australia.

Critically, the common denominator across most of Australia's injuries is a seam-bowling capacity, with that pitfall further exacerbated by Cameron Green being considered only as a batter (workload managed).

A greater reliance on spin bowling is likely to balance the side at selection, with Australia A players Travis Head and Matthew Kuhnemann flown over today as cover after Scott Boland joined the squad on Tuesday.

Matthew Kuhnemann's international debut is a real prospect if conditions suit in Pallekelle, having been pulled from the ongoing Australia A game in Hambantota. With Agar injured and Adam Zampa not on tour, Kuhnemann may join Queensland teammate Mitch Swepson in Australian colours tonight.

Kuhnemman spent time with fellow left-arm orthodox bowler Stephen O'Keefe ahead of the tour after being last season's leading Sheffield Shield spin bowler (taking 25 wickets from seven matches). His potential ODI call-up could be an audition for the Test series if Agar is not fit in time.

Australian captain Pat Cummins was not concerned with the stacked list of injuries in his camp, saying his side will manage the balance going forward.

“I think we've got a bit of time to gather some info so whether it's bringing up some guys here into the the ODI squad who might get a chance, there’s still one more four-day game next week as well,” said Pat Cummins, speaking to the media in Kandy on Wednesday.

“We’ve still got a couple of guys back in Australia as well. So absolutely, if someone's picked for the Test side we'll think they're ready."
