Glenn Maxwell is facing fresh injury concerns after making his return from a broken leg in the Shield, now reportedly suffering a fractured wrist.

Maxwell broke his leg late in November, finally returning to the field with Victoria in their Sheffield Shield clash against South Australia as he prepares for the upcoming Indian Premier League season.

The 34-year-old, who hasn't played a Shield match since 2019, left the field after getting hit in the wrist twice while fielding to be assessed by the medical team.

Adam White, cricket.com.au commentator, confirmed the injury concerns while speaking on SEN Mornings.

“I don't think 'Maxi' drinks enough milk,” White said.

“He had the broken leg and now there's genuine fears he may have a fracture in his wrist.

“He left the field about 15 minutes ago, he got hit twice fielding at first slip – you know when the ball doesn't get you on the field, it hits you on the half volley on the up and it's an awkward bouncing one – it hit him on the arm in pretty much consecutive overs.

“He's left the field, he's spent a fair bit of time with the medicos, it's just a question now to whether (what the injury is).”

With Maxwell targeting an international return to feature in Australia's ODI series against India in March, this latest injury blow puts his chances in serious doubt. Despite having no confirmation on the extent of the issue, Maxwell was in noticeable pain as he left the playing field.

“It is cold down here, so maybe it's just a bruise and he can go back out there,” White said.

“But at this stage he's being assessed … there was a flurry of activity with the Victorian medical team, the Australian medical officers down there as well.

“So, fingers crossed, but it didn't look good, he was in a lot of pain as he left the field.”

The South Australian's failed to catch Victoria's first innings score of 169, bowled out for 114.
