Australian white-ball star Glenn Maxwell is said to be making a "daring bid" to return to the Australian Test setup as he prepares to impress through upcoming Sheffield Shield matches.

Maxwell, who has represented Australia's red-ball team on seven occasions, last featured in Test whites for his nation in 2017 against Bangladesh in Chattogram, where he recorded scores of 38 and an unbeaten 25.

Selection has since unfavoured the Victorian big-hitter, however Maxwell found himself on the fringes of Andrew McDonald's XI for their series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

With McDonald and selection chairman George Bailey set to assess their options for the summer and beyond, Maxwell will press his case for Victoria at the domestic level.

The veteran middle-order batsman is expected to feature for his state in upcoming Shield Tests against Tasmania and New South Wales across the next month in a bid that could place the 34-year-old in the frame for next year's trip to India.

According to 7 News, Maxwell will look to end his Sheffield Shield hiatus in a matter of weeks as he plots a potential international Test return.

The Sydney Morning Herald have suggested that Maxwell is well within the selectors' view alongside Victorian teammate Peter Handscomb and Queenslander Matt Renshaw, who are among the most in-form Shield batsmen heading into summer.

Bailey confirmed Australia's Test squad for India could see a number of fresh faces following Australia's campaign against the West Indies and South Africa on home soil in the coming months.

“I would envisage that the Test tour to India may have some different names to it than what the team does over the summer,” Bailey said.

“Just because the conditions that we expect to face are every chance to be very different again.

“You probably take a slightly bigger squad anyway – I don't think we'd be taking a skinny squad across there, plus it's at the back of a summer and there's a reasonable amount of cricket that would have been played by then.”

Australia confirmed their Test squad to face the West Indies as part of their two-Test series, with the size of the squad cut back to 13 players given the end of COVID requirements.

The trio of Handscomb, Renshaw and Maxwell are sure to be part of the next wave of options for Bailey to consider should a reshuffle of the batting order be required.

All three are also said to be in the frame for a spot to face South Africa as part of Australia A's schedule early next month.

Maxwell made his Test debut for Australia in India in 2013 and has scored 339 runs at an average of 26.07 at the international level.
