Despite not having a title after the first 10 editions of the Big Bash League (BBL), the Melbourne Stars have had no shortage of talented players put on their green kit.

From famous international imports, to some of the best Victorian talent in Australia, the talent pool for this XI runs deep.

Here is the best XI in Melbourne Stars history.

1. Marcus Stoinis 

Stoinis is the Melbourne Stars all-time leading run-scorer in the Big Bash, amassing a total of 2,171 runs at an average of 37.98. Regularly opening the batting, the strongly built Stoinis has put together fourteen half-centuries and has reached the triple-figure mark on one occasion, with a famous 147 not out off 79 balls against the Sydney Sixers at the MCG in BBL 9.

Along with his batting capabilities, Stoinis is more than serviceable with ball in hand where he has taken 36 wickets at an average of 20.97 with best figures of 4/21. His career at the Stars has spanned from 2013-Present.

2. Luke Wright 

English international Luke Wright was a revelation for the Stars, being apart of their inaugural team in BBL 1. Wright sits third all-time for runs scored for the Stars with 1,479 at an average of 29.00.

The big-hitting Englishman scored two centuries in his time with the Stars, the most memorable being against cross-town rivals the Melbourne Renegades in front of over 80,000 where he blasted an unbeaten 109* off just 63 deliveries.

In the earlier seasons, Wright also rolled the arm over, collecting 6 wickets at an average of 40.50 but it's his batting record which has him firmly entrenched at the top of the order.

Wright was a Star from 2011-2018.

3. Kevin Pietersen 

Quite possibly the biggest international name alongside Chris Gayle that the BBL has ever seen, 'KP' wasn't just a household attraction for the Melbourne Stars.

Coming in at fourth place on the Stars all-time run-scorers list, Pietersen compiled 1,110 runs at an average of 37.00 in just 33 games for the franchise. A high score of 76, Pietersen also made 10 half-centuries helping the Stars continually push for that elusive title.

Along with his batting brilliance, 'KP' brought great publicity to the competition and further to that he brought a great personality to the game. Often on the mic to the telecast, the English megastar provided great insight while on the field.

4. David Hussey (vc)

David Hussey would provide the stability at number 4 in this batting lineup, surrounded by a number of big hitters. Another member of the inaugural Stars squad from BBL 1, Hussey was a loyal and consistent performer for the Stars.

Fifth on the all-time run-scoring tally for the Stars with 855 runs at an average at an average of 26.71, Hussey also captained the Stars after the departure of Cameron White to the Renegades.

5. Glenn Maxwell (c)

The current captain of the Stars and a regular in the Australian T20 side, Glenn Maxwell is one of the best short-form players in the world.

After crossing over to the Stars from cross-town rival the Renegades after BBL 1, Maxwell has been a Star ever since. The big-hitting All-rounder sits second behind Marcus Stoinis for total runs scored with 2,081 at an average of 33.56.

Maxwell boasts the highest strike rate of any Stars player that has scored over 100 runs for the franchise at 150.25, while he is also a regular bowler in the power play overs. He has collected 36 wickets in his Stars career at an average of 29.78.

6. Peter Handscomb (wk)

Taking the gloves in this XI is long time Melbourne Star Peter Handscomb. A member of the franchise from 2012-2020 Handscomb sits in sixth place for most runs scored for the team in green with 834 at an average of 27.80.

His most memorable moment for the Stars came when he hit a famous 103* off 69 balls against the Perth Scorchers in 2014/2015.

7. James Faulkner

Known throughout his career as the 'finisher' for his success during successful run chases at both domestic and international level, James Faulkner fills an All-rounder position in this XI.

During his time in Melbourne from 2011-2018, Faulkner managed to tally 531 runs at an average of 27.94. With the ball, Faulkner took a total of 44 wickets at an average of 23.81 while his economy rate was an impressive 7.61.

8. John Hastings 

Known as the 'duke', John Hastings played for the Stars between 2012-2018. A proud Victorian at his core, Hastings was a consistent member of the Stars fast bowling cartel where he collected 50 wickets at an average 21.24.

Known for his bowling prowess, Hastings was not shy of striking a lusty blow with bat in hand either. In his 23 innings, Hastings smashed thirteen 6's to have an average of 12.66. A valuable asset late in the batting order.

9. Adam Zampa

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa is the all-time leading wicket-taker for the Melbourne Stars. In his time at the Stars he has taken 72 wickets at an average of 20.77.

Adding a dangerous element to this bowling line-up, Zampa has the ability to bowl during the powerplay, the middle overs or at the death of an innings.

Zampa has been at the Melbourne Stars since 2015.

10. Sandeep Lamichhane

Another of the successful international imports to play for the Stars, Sandeep Lamichhane made a big impact in his short stay in Melbourne.

Lamichhane only resided in Melbourne between 2018-2020 however he collected 26 wickets at an average of 20.38. What made the young Nepalese import so valuable to the Stars was is 7.09 economy rate.

 

11. Lasith Malinga 

The famous Sri Lankan bowler came over to Australia in BBL 2 and made an immediate impact for the Stars.

One of the great T20 bowlers of all-time took 18 wickets at an average of just 15.00 and an economy rate of only 5.40. His signature moment came at the WACA in 2012 where he took an incredible 6/7 against the Perth Scorchers.

The Sri Lankan legend played for the Stars from 2012-2014.
