Australian Mitchell Johnson has delivered at the death, taking 2/9 off the final over of the match. of the IPL final overnight.

His effort helped the Mumbai Indians to a one-run win over Steve Smith's Rising Pune, meaning they claimed the IPL trophy.

The Indians won the toss, and elected to bat. That decision didn't bode well early, as they lost both Lendl Simmons (3 off 8), and Parthiv Patel (4 off 6) before the start of the fourth over.

Ambati Rayudu helped steady the ship, before he was run out by Steve Smith for 12. Krunal Pandya (47 off 38) led Mumbai, his effort with the bat helping them get to 8/129. Mitchell Johnson came in late and finished unbeaten on 13.

Jaydev Unadkat was the best of the Rising Pune bowlers, taking 2/19 off his four over. The Australians got amongst the wickets as well, with Adam Zampa claiming 2/32, and Dan Christian finishing with figures of 2/34.

Despite losing Rahul Tripathi (3 off 8) early, Rising Pune appeared as though they would chase Mumbai's total with ease. Steve Smith and Ajinkya Rahane got the total to 1/71 before the latter was removed for 44 in the 12th over.

The run rate then slowed, as the Mumbai bowlers put the clamps on their opposition. Lasith Malinga (0/21 off 4 overs), Karn Sharma (0/18 off 4 overs) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/26 off 4 overs) were all pivotal.

The Australian skipper continued on though, reaching his fifty late in the innings.

Heading into the final over, Rising Pune needed 11 runs to win. Veteran Mitchell Johnson was handed the ball, his side needing him to deliver.

It didn't start off well, with Manoj Tiwary blasting a four off the first ball. However, Johnson would turn it around, he removed the Indian the very next ball, with Kieron Pollard taking a catch in the deep. Johnson then struck again immediately, claiming the wicket of Smith.

This made the equation a lot harder for Rising Pune, needing seven runs off three balls with two new batsman at the crease.

The hat-trick ball almost resulted in a wicket, however, Dan Christian managed to scamper down the pitch and avoid being run out by the keeper.

Needing 6 off 2, Christian flicked a ball to the leg side, and was dropped in the deep. He managed to come back for two, meaning it would be an all Aussie final delivery.

The scene was set for someone to step-up and be the hero, as Christian would need a boundary off last over to win.

Johnson came round the wicket and pitched the ball into the legs of his Australian counterpart. Christian managed to get bat to it, however it was saved in the deep by the substitute fielder. He fumbled it on the return throw, but managed to get it back in time to run Washington Sundar out before he could complete the third run.

Mumbai's Krunal Pandya was awarded man of the match honours for his 47 off 38 balls.

It is the Indians' third title in five years, with their first coming in 2013.
