Former England star, Andrew Flintoff has revealed a bold prediction of how this summer's Ashes will play out, stating the English are certain to retain the urn.

England's middle order has been widely criticism, particuarly following a less than impressive recent Test series again the West Indies. Meanwhile, star allrounder Ben Stokes' hopes of playing the Ashes dangle by a thread after he was arrested for assault last month.

But Flintoff believes the old guard of the likes of Jimmy Anderson and Alastair Cook will once again be too strong for Australia.

"It's probably the best England team we've ever had" the 2005 Ashes hero told the BBC.

"We've got Jimmy Anderson, who is England's best-ever bowler, Alastair Cook, England's best-ever batter.  And you throw in the likes of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, who (are) fantastic - it's exciting times.

"It's not a case of England winning, it's by how many. I believe in that side.

"It's the type of side you'd want to be involved in, from the coach and the captain down. I think England will have a good winter."

England announced its 16-man Ashes squad last week, naming three uncapped players, in wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, fast bowler Craig Overton and leg spinner Mason Crane.

The first Test begins at the Gabba on November 22.
