Melbourne Renegades opener Aaron Finch is set to miss the start of the upcoming Big Bash season.

The veteran opener, who recently rescinded his role as captain of the Renegades, is tipped to be sidelined for his side's season opener against the Adelaide Strikers next Tuesday at Marvel Stadium.

Finch only recently touched down in Melbourne following Australia's T20 World Cup heroics, which saw the 35-year-old lead his nation to another international crown while battling a knee injury.

The Renegades' all-time leading runs scorer has looked to nurse the injury since returning to Victoria, having remained out of the picture for the Melbourne side's pre-season preparations ahead of their opening fixture.

Now, according to NCA Newswire, Finch is set to miss next week's clash against the Strikers and could remain sidelined for the opening four matches of the Renegades' BBL|11.

Should Finch be absent for the opening quartet of matches of the season, the former captain will miss the Renegades' following matches against the Strikers (A), Heat (A) and Scorchers (H).

The Australian T20 captain became a first-time father on the eve of the World Cup and was tipped to hold down the captaincy duties in the absence of newly-appointed skipper Nick Maddinson.

The in-form Maddinson was named in Cricket Australia's extended squad for the Ashes, firming as a chance to represent Australia in the Ashes for the final three Test matches of the series should a position in the top half of the batting order open up.

Maddinson will feature in a three-day intra-squad match against the Australian 15-man Test squad from Wednesday in hope of proving his worth to selectors.

With Shaun Marsh joining Finch on the sidelines through injury, rookie coach David Saker could look to international all-rounder Mohammad Nabi to lead the Renegades early into their BBL season.

Fast bowling pair Kane Richardson and James Pattinson would also be in the frame to be present at the coin toss in Maddinson's absence.

The BBL season is set to commence on Sunday night as the Sydney Sixers host the Melbourne Stars at the SCG.
