An unbeaten 51 off 37 balls from Australian captain Steve Smith was not enough for Rising Pune, going down to Kolkata by seven wickets in the IPL overnight.

The Australian captain lost the toss, and his team were sent into bat.

Ajinkya Rahane (46) and Rahul Tripathi (38) opened up well for the the Supergiants, with the latter's wicket bringing Smith to the crease.

He went to work immediately, accumulating runs while Rahane attacked the bowling. Smith's leg-side play was particularly impressive, the use of his wrists rivalling that of the local stars.

MS Dhoni had an exciting cameo after Rahane was dismissed, hitting 23 off just 11 balls. Smith then watched two quick wickets fall, before Dan Christian joined him at the crease.

The fellow Australian managed a quick-fire 16 before being caught off the final ball of the innings, with Rising Pune posting 5/182 off their 20 overs.

Smith's innings put him past 1500 runs in the IPL. Something which only five other Australians (Warner, Watson, S. Marsh, Gilchrist, and M. Hussey) have done.

Chasing 183 for victory, Kolkata started off relatively well. However, pinch hitter Sunil Narine (16 off 11) was runout in third over, after some brilliant fielding from Shardul Thakur.

That bought Robin Uthappa to the crease. He was dropped on 12 off the bowling of Imran Tahir. But after that he and partner Gautam Ghambir went into 'beast mode'.

The two blasted the Supergiants bowlers to all parts, with Ghambir also gaining a reprieve, dropped on 32.

Their partnership ended on an impressive 158, however at that point there was only five runs needed to win. Uthappa managed an incredible 87 off 47, including six sixes, while Ghambir had 62 off 46.

The Knight Riders chased the Rising Pune total with more than an over to spare. Australian Dan Christian was the best of the Supergiants bowlers, finishing with 1/31 off four overs.

Smith's side now sit in fourth position, and will have a battle on their hands to hold their finals spot.
