Mohali, Nagpur and Hyderabad will host Australia as Andrew McDonald’s side tours India for a three-match T20 international series in late September.

In what is a white-ball heavy period for Australia, they will leave home soil after starting the home "summer" of cricket, which can only be described as a rare move brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand in Townsville and Cairns will kick the summer off in late August and early September, with the final ODI against New Zealand to be played on September 11.

Both of those series were supposed to be played last year but were ultimately delayed.

When the original future tours programme was released, this tour prior to the Australian summer was supposed to include a four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy, however, with a postponed T20 World Cup to play back on home soil, the Tests were moved to February and March, with Austrlaia needed back on home soil to play the West Indies and England in a pair of T20 series from October 5 before the tournament kicks off.

The three-match tour of India will mean the Aussies play eight T20 matches in a short time window - between September 20 and October 14 - during the lead-up to the tournament.

The series against India kicks off on September 20 in Mohali, before moving to Nagpur on September 23 and Hyderabad on September 25.

India will also host South Africa in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup, with the first T20 against the Proteas on the sub-continent to be played on September 28 in Trivandrum. Guwahati and Indore will host the other two matches on October 1 and October 3, before a three-match ODI series is also played from October 6 to October 11, however, both teams could move to second-string teams for that series given the need to prepare for the World Cup, which commences on October 22.
