Former Australian opener Cameron Bancroft is set to sign a deal with the Sydney Thunder to play with them from BBL 13 onwards.

A three-year offer has been made to Bancroft after having a spectacular year with the Scorchers that ultimately won them the grand final earlier this year against the Brisbane Heat.

The Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes were also looking to acquire Bancroft's services but were beaten by the Sydney Thunder, according to cricket.com.au.

The 30-year-old averaged 51 runs at a 140 strike rate in BBL 12, which had him finish the tournament with four 50s and a high score of 95*. Thus making last season's campaign his best yet.

He has not been a regular for the Scorchers after being in and out for the majority of the eight years he was in Perth. Unfortunately for Perth, Bancroft's form in T20's came too late and concerns surrounding the salary cap mant they couldn't offer him a greater deal.

It also comes about Cricket Australia's new contracting rules for next season, where a club can have at least six 'marquee' players in each squad that can be paid more than $200,000. This led the payment pools to increase by $1.1 million to a total of $3 million.

WA Cricket chief executive Christina Matthews spoke last week about the poor timing for Bancroft.

"You contract players for multiple years and he's fallen out of contract at the wrong time for how his form came," Matthews said.

But a reunion to open with David Warner might be on the cards, with Warner signing on for two more years last season. The last time these two opened was in the 2019 Ashes Series in England where both players struggled against the English quicks.

The pair were infamously involved in the sandpaper controversy that saw both batsmen and Australian captain Steve Smith suspended.

Bancroft may also have the opportunity to be a keeper as he filled in for Josh Inglis, who was battling illness in a Marsh Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania in February.

He is currently participating in the County Championship for Somerset in England.

With the trading window opening on the 22nd of May, clubs can acquire players from rival clubs.
