Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has revealed he would pick David Warner as Australia's next T20 captain.

Australia were bundled out of the T20 World Cup after a poor run through the group stage, which started with a loss to New Zealand by 89 runs in Sydney, before a trio of games against Sri Lanka, Ireland and Afghanistan were the team failed to improve its net run rate position.

Aaron Finch, who only 12 months ago lifted the T20 World Cup with Australia's first victory at the tournament in the United Arab Emirates, has recently retired from the ODI arena and could head the same way in T20 cricket, although has suggested he won't be rushing into a decision.

Australia's next T20 cricket isn't until August next year when they play South Africa, with Test cricket and preparations for the ODI World Cup taking over.

"I've had an opinion on who should have been the short-term T20 World Cup captain for a while, and that's David Warner," Watson told reporters.

"But that seems to have been caught up in the bureaucracy of Australian cricket because of a couple of lines of a code of conduct legal document.

"For me, David Warner is an excellent decision-maker under pressure, tactually he's very good, he's a very good leader and he's very experienced as well.

"I'm just disappointed that for his sake he hasn't had an opportunity to lead the Aussies because he's a very good leader.

"Obviously it's not a long-term solution, but another T20 World Cup is coming up in a few years and Dave is still going to be performing very well."

Warner, who is also approaching the back end of his career, has suggested he will play until at least the end of next year's ODI World Cup, but could go further.

He is also still under a leadership ban from Cricket Australia, however, there has been speculation that could be lifted - speculation which has died off since Pat Cummins was named captain of the ODI team.

Cummins has reservations around captaining all three formats, and Warner could be the obvious choice to take over the T20 team if Cummins was to stand down.
