Rising Pune Supergiants captain Steve Smith has produced a stunning innings to lead his side to victory overnight.

In what was their IPL opener, the Aussie skipper hit two consecutive sixes to win the game.

The Supergiants won the toss and sent Mumbai in to bat. Mumbai got away to a quick start, Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler producing a 45-run opening partnership. The rest of the Mumbai side continued on from the strong start, with Hardik Pandya finishing the innings off strong with 35 of 15 balls. 30 of his runs came off one Ashok Dinda over.

Rajat Bhatia was the pick of the bowlers for Rising Pune, taking 2/14 off 3 overs. South African Imran Tahir chipped in with 3/28, while fellow leg spinner, Australian Adam Zampa, took 1/26.

Chasing 185, the Supergiants lost Mayank Agarwal (6) cheaply, however that bought Steve Smith to the crease. He and opener Ajinkya Rahane combined for a 50+ run partner ship, before the Indian was removed for 60 off 34.

Smith then flicked the switch, he helped himself to 12 off a Kieron Pollard over, and continued to find the rope again and again. His innings was a mixture of brilliant touch, exquisite timing, and Steve Smith creativity.

However, with MS Dhoni, and Smith at the crease, it still took Rising Pune til the last over to claim the victory. With 13 needed off the final over, the two star batsmen only managed 3 singles off the first three balls. This set the stage for Smith, needing 10 off the three deliveries. The captain threw the kitchen sink at the fourth of the deciding over, blasting it over the mid-on boundary. The next ball Smith whipped over backward square leg, clearing the fence, and claiming the win. He finished unbeaten on 84 off 54 balls.

Mumbai will be ruing their missed chances, dropping Smith when he was on 36. The Indians also missed an opportunity to remove MS Dhoni in the penultimate over, however that proved less costly.

The innings from the Australian skipper carries on his brilliant form on Indian soil. Smith will be pleased on an opening game win for his side, after he was given the captaincy instead of Indian legend MS Dhoni.

The Supergiants next match will be on Saturday, coming up against Glenn Maxwell's King XI Punjab.
