Australian skipper Steve Smith has been promoted to the role of captain for his IPL franchise the Rising Pune Supergiants.

Smith takes over the role from MS Dhoni, who also stood down from his role as captain of India's limited overs teams before the recent England series.

The Supergiants finished second last in their inaugural IPL campaign last season, their season was curtailed by injuries to Smith, Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis and Mitchell Marsh.

Franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka said they needed to bounce back from last season's failure.

"We have opted for Steve Smith as captain of RPS for the forthcoming IPL season," Goenka told India Today.

"Despite having a good side, the team did not get expected results last year.

"Last year we failed. We could have done much better."

"(Dhoni) was cooperation personified when we conveyed the decision to him."

The decision to remove Dhoni as captain has effectively ended the wicketkeeper-batsman's innings as skipper in both domestic and international format.
